Raiden is a 1990 scrolling shooter arcade game that was developed by Seibu Kaihatsu. It was the first game in the popular Raiden series of scrolling shooter arcade games.

Raiden first made its debut in September 1990. The game was distributed in Japan, North America by Fabtek, Taiwan by Liang HWA Electronics, Korea by IBL Corporation, Hong Kong by Wah Yan Electronics, Malaysia as well as other countries.

The game was first released in Japan in 1984, and was developed and published by Irem Corporation. It was also licensed for release in America by Data East. The Japanese version of the game was called Spartan X, and believed to be named after a Jackie Chan movie of the same name.

The game is a single or two player alternating turn beat 'em up. The gamer plays the character of Keiji Thomas, who's girlfriend has been kidnapped by a Mr. X. The objective is straight forward, Keiji must battle his way through five different levels to rescue his beloved Sylvia.

The Space Invaders franchise has flourished for more than 20 years and according to Taito, the game has generated more than $500 million in revenues over multiple platforms including coin-op, the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo. It was based on a 8080 CPU, had muffled analog audio, and simulated color by putting a transparent overlay on top of a monochrome display.

The arcade version Gryzor as it was then called in Europe, was released in 1987 by the Konami Corporation and designed by Koji Hiroshita. It wasn't until Gryzor was imported into American market that the name changed. The change came about because of the two Japanese Kanji symbols that appeared on the side of the game cabinet. These two symbols were pronounced Kon and Tra, and the name stuck ever since.
